The scan

What is a musculoskeletal ultrasound?

Musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound uses sound waves to show tendons, muscles, ligaments, bursae and the surface of joints on a screen in real time. It’s quick, painless and doesn’t use radiation.

Because it’s live, we can scan the area while you move it, compare it with the other side, and press on the exact spot that hurts. That often makes the cause of the pain much clearer.

What ultrasound can’t show: it can’t see inside bones or deep inside some joints. If you need an X-ray or MRI scan instead, we’ll tell you and explain how to arrange one.

  • Cortisone injection★★★★★
I recently had an ultrasound guided cortisone injection with Gary… Gary took the time to explain everything clearly before the procedure which really put me at ease, not easy when you’re not a fan of needles! The process itself was essentially pain free.

  • Frozen shoulder★★★★★
Gary helped me with my frozen shoulder. He was very thorough, professional and informative. I was given a cortisone injection, which he talked me through. During the procedure he was calming and efficient.

  • Hyaluronic acid★★★★★
I first saw Gary for a consultation regarding the arthritis in my knees with a view to having a hyaluronic acid injection. Gary was extremely knowledgeable and went through all the options before suggesting which would be the best option for me.

  • Knee injection★★★★★
My mum had acute knee pain which has been treated at the clinic, she now has much better mobility and positive outlook due to the treatment received. Gary has been so helpful and supportive throughout the consultation and treatment.

  • Stem cell★★★★★
I cannot thank Gary and Gabriel enough for the stem cell treatment they gave me. When I started my treatment my tendonitis was so bad in my elbows that I couldn’t carry my little children, drive the car or do my day job without getting in severe pain.

Your questions

a musculoskeletal ultrasound questions answered

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly with us by phone.

Does the scan hurt?

No. The probe is moved gently over the skin with a little gel. Pressing over a painful area can be tender for a moment.

How long does it take?

Most scans take around 15 to 30 minutes, including time to explain what we see.

Do I get a report?

We explain the findings during your appointment. A written report costs £100, if you need one for your GP, consultant or insurer.

Is ultrasound as good as an MRI scan?

For many tendon, muscle and soft tissue problems, ultrasound is very useful, and it can show the area moving. It can’t see inside bone or deep inside some joints, where an MRI or X-ray may be better. We’ll tell you if you need one.
