Creating a natural-looking result

A good hair transplant shouldn’t look like a hair transplant. That depends as much on careful design as on surgical technique.

Design

Why design matters

Natural hair doesn’t grow in straight lines or even rows. It grows in small groups of one to four hairs, called follicular units, in slightly irregular patterns, at particular angles and directions.

A natural-looking transplant copies this. That means a hairline that suits your face and age, single hairs at the very front with fuller groups behind, and every graft placed at the angle your own hair grows.

The details

What makes a result look natural

  • The right hairline

Designed to suit your face shape, and set at a height that will still look right as you get older.

  • Soft, irregular edges

A slightly uneven hairline, rather than a sharp line, as natural hairlines are.

  • Angle and direction

Each graft placed to follow the natural direction of your hair.

  • Gradual density

Finer single hairs at the front, blending into fuller groups behind.

Planning

Drawing the new hairline

Before the procedure, the new hairline is drawn on the scalp, so you can see exactly where it will sit and agree it with your surgeon. In this example, the line restores the temples in a soft curve rather than a straight edge.

Planning ahead

Thinking about the future

Hair loss can continue after a transplant. A hairline that looks good at 30 may look out of place at 50 if the hair behind it thins further. So we plan for the long term: a sensible hairline height and careful use of donor hair, which is limited and can’t be replaced.

Your questions

Natural results questions answered

Can I choose where my hairline goes?

We’ll design it with you. Dr Shah will also advise on what will look natural and age-appropriate now and in future, and how much donor hair is available.

Will people be able to tell I’ve had a transplant?

Once it has healed and grown, a well-planned transplant is designed to blend in with your own hair. Results vary, and we’ll explain what’s realistic for your hair at your consultation.
